How to Elevate Your Brand with Custom Medal Design

Make Your Own Medal. A medal is more than a prize; it's a piece of art that tells a story. The best designs go beyond a simple logo, weaving in elements that resonate with the event and its participants. Here's a look at how to transform your vision into an unforgettable keepsake.

The most impactful medals are those that incorporate a deeper narrative. Consider these creative approaches:

1. Thematic Integration: Start with the core theme of your event. If it's a marathon, think about the unique course. Did it pass through a historic district? Feature a scenic waterfront? Incorporate a map silhouette or a landmark into the medal's shape or detailing.

These medals belong to a series of running events held in South Norwalk (abbreviated as "SONO"), Connecticut, USA, covering different events such as 5-kilometer (5K) and half-marathon (HALF). Each medal carries a story that blends the urban style with the sports spirit.

  1. "Miniature Picture Scroll" of Urban Features
The relief patterns (buildings, bridges, etc.) on the medals accurately restore the iconic waterfront and industrial landscapes of South Norwalk — this place once prospered due to shipping and industrial development, and the old buildings and bridges are like the "annual rings" of the city's history. The medals "freeze" these unique features, allowing runners to still recall the texture and memories of the city through the medals after finishing the race.
  2. "Time Stamp" for Event Inheritance and Runners
The dates on the medals (such as "10.14.17" and "10.20.18") mark the holding time of each event and witness the continuity of the events: year after year, South Norwalk takes running as a link to invite enthusiasts to this "city appointment". For runners, the date is a "time stamp" for them to challenge themselves and connect with the city.
  3. "Spiritual Link" between Sports and Urban IP
The words "SONO 5K" and "SONO HALF" clearly define the event items and demonstrate the courage to challenge different distances; the logo "#RUNSONO" further deeply binds the event with the urban IP, making "Running in South Norwalk" a unique sports cultural symbol, attracting more and more enthusiasts to join and making the event an "amplifier" of the city's vitality.
  4. "Dual Carrier" of Honor and Experience
The diverse colors of the ribbons (fresh blue, retro green, etc.) convey the vitality and diverse atmosphere of the event. For runners, the medal is not only a proof of honor for completing the race, but also carries the street scenes passed by during running, the sweat shed, and the unique experience of "mutual rush" with South Norwalk; for the city, the medal is a flowing "business card", conveying the historical charm and sports enthusiasm of South Norwalk to every participant and witness.

This medal ultimately becomes a shared vessel for runners' memories and the city's stories — it not only engraves individual athletic achievements but also tells of the vitality and inclusiveness that South Norwalk showcases to the world through the event.

2. Brand and Logo Reinvention: Don't just slap a logo on a medal. Ask yourself how the brand's identity can be integrated in a creative way. Can the logo be used to create an interesting cut-out? Or perhaps its colors can be used in a translucent enamel fill, giving the medal a premium, stained-glass effect. We recently designed a corporate award where the company's logo was transformed into a multi-layered spinning element, creating an interactive and memorable design.

3. Capturing Local Essence: For events tied to a specific location, incorporate local landmarks, cultural symbols, or even native flora and fauna. A medal for a race in Paris could feature the Eiffel Tower as a negative space cut-out. For a conference in London, we created a design that incorporated the iconic double-decker bus, using vibrant red enamel to make it pop.

These medals belong to the "Ecuador Volcano Expedition" series of activities initiated by the "Percona Adventure Team", and each medal is engraved with the courage and stories of explorers conquering Ecuador's iconic volcanoes.

1. "Dual Coordinates" of Geography and Exploration

The medals take the "volcanic landforms of Ecuador" as the core geographical clue:

- Left (2022): The text "COTOPAXI 5,897 M" refers to "Cotopaxi Volcano" — it is one of the most famous active volcanoes in Ecuador, with an altitude of 5,897 meters. It has become a classic destination in the exploration world due to its majestic volcanic shape and unique geological landscape; "ECUADOR VOLCANOES 2022" indicates the theme and year of the event, and the relief of the volcano in the background more intuitively restores the magnificent outline of Cotopaxi.

- Right (2023): The text "CHIMBORAZO 6,263 M" focuses on "Mount Chimborazo" — although it is not the highest peak in the world, it has become the "thickest place on Earth" (the farthest distance from the center of the Earth to the peak) due to the equatorial "bulge effect", and the altitude of 6,263 meters is more challenging; "ECUADOR VOLCANOES 2023" continues the vein of "volcano exploration", and the relief of the mountain shape in the background accurately corresponds to the unique landform of Chimborazo.

 2. "Embodiment" of the Spirit of Exploration

The core patterns are the concrete expressions of the spirit of exploration:

- Cotopaxi medal (2022): The "heroic" figure wearing armor and a red cloak metaphorically represents that explorers "use superhero-like courage and perseverance" to overcome the tests of high altitude and complex terrain, and the process of conquering the volcano is an adventure of "self-heroization".

- Chimborazo medal (2023): The powerful leopard-like (or mythical beast) image symbolizes that explorers need to have "beast-like tenacity, agility and wild courage" to cope with the more extreme challenges of Mount Chimborazo, which is a vivid metaphor for the "spirit of extreme exploration".

3. "Annual Appointment" between the Expedition Team and Volcanoes

The ribbon is printed with "PERC" (abbreviation of Percona), which strengthens the brand imprint of the expedition team. From Cotopaxi in 2022 to Chimborazo in 2023, the medal series has witnessed the "annual appointment" between the expedition team and Ecuador's volcanoes" — launching an impact on higher and more challenging volcanoes every year and solidifying the conquest achievements into medal memories.

In the end, these medals are not only a proof of honor for explorers to "conquer volcanoes", but also a "dual carrier" of the charm of Ecuador's volcanoes and the spirit of exploration": they not only show the unique geographical value of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, but also convey the exploration core of "challenging limits and dancing with nature" through dynamic patterns, attracting more people to embark on the journey of exploring Ecuador's volcanoes.
